Wedding FAQs - The Photos

  • How will we receive our photos?

Like this!  I deliver wedding photos using an online gallery, so that you can share them with friends and family easily and order prints straight away if you like.  I can also offer a USB option for delivering your photos. Can’t decide?  Just ask for both!

  • When will we receive our finished gallery?

I will endeavour to give you your finished photographs as soon as possible, but certainly within eight weeks of the wedding date and payment being received, whichever is later.

  • Can we share our photos with family and friends?

Please do!  As far as I’m concerned, the photos are yours to use as you please, and that includes sharing them with friends and family – at no extra cost.

  • How long does the online gallery stay live?

One year from the wedding date.

  • Will we get some preview photos?

I endeavour to give all my couples a small selection of at least a dozen photographs as soon as I can after the wedding, usually within about two days.  This way you have some photos that you can have and share immediately if you’d like!

  • Do you add watermarks to your photos?

    No.

  • What are the restrictions on using the photos you deliver?

As far as I’m concerned, you’ve paid for these photos and therefore can use them however you like, with one exception – you may not sell them or use them for profit.  Otherwise, they’re all yours!

  • Who owns the copyright on the photographs you take?

I retain copyright for any photographs I have taken, as stated in the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988.

  • Can you photoshop our photos?

All photos are processed to an extent, but my editing work is limited to cropping, colour and lighting adjustments, and minor cloning if necessary.  I do not offer edits of anyone’s appearance as I find this dishonest and harmful.  My photography is all about capturing the real you in all your beauty!

  • Will you Photoshop someone out of our wedding photos?

No.  This is much more work and takes much more time than many people realise, and is a misrepresentation of what actually happened.

  • Would you change your photography or editing style for us?

No.  I shoot the way I shoot because that’s what I and my clients enjoy.  If you don’t like the way I shoot or the edit, then I’m probably not the photographer for you.

  • How many photos will be in black and white?

I don’t have a hard and fast rule for this, but on average roughly 10% of the photos I deliver will usually be in black and white.  If you would prefer me to deliver all photos in colour then please let me know.

  • Do we have to have certain photos at our wedding?

Absolutely not!  It’s your wedding and I will never force you to make any picture if you don’t want to.  I’ll go with your ideas and flow to make sure you get the photos you want.

  • Can you show us a whole wedding, not just the highlights?

Yes.  This is really important for you to see so that you can get an idea of what a whole gallery looks like.  I can absolutely show you this if asked.  It would be all too easy to show only the “highlight reel” images, but you really need to see a full gallery to get a good idea of what I deliver.

  • Do you provide printed albums?

No.  I find that designing albums is so easy to do nowadays that couples will do a much better job of this themselves.  This way you can choose your favourite photos and make sure that your most important moments aren’t missing!

Something I haven’t answered?

Wedding FAQs - The Wedding Day

  • Do you shoot outdoor weddings?

I absolutely adore the outdoors and will jump at the chance to shoot your outdoor wedding!  I’ve shot weddings in fields, forests, and even in the middle of the Strathpuffer endurance bicycle race!

  • Our wedding is unconventional – would you shoot that too?

YES!  I LOVE unconventional, and will be happy to shoot pretty much anything!  The more unconventional, the better.  The wedding is about you two – make it yours!

  • What do you do if it rains all day?

Being in Scotland, this is always in the back of my mind.  My first option would be – just carry on and dance in the rain!  I won’t let a bit of water stop me, and if you’re okay with it then we can take a brolly and head into the weather anyway!  Of course, if you’d rather not or it’s just an all-day monsoon, then of course we can do everything we need to inside too.  But, fingers crossed, that’s not happened to me yet…

  • Will you take group shots?

Absolutely.  It’s very rare that a couple don’t want group shots, so I will always offer this option during weddings.  A great way to make these run as quickly and efficiently as possible is by making a group shot list – this way we don’t take too much time away from you and your guests!  A tip about group photos: I would keep them to 10 or less if possible.  They always take longer than you think!

  • Will there be photos of just the two of us?

Certainly.  Usually we will go away together somewhere quiet to take some photographs of the two of you.  This is one of the only moments you’ll get alone together, so savour this lovely time!  But of course, these photos are not compulsory – if you’d prefer to give these a miss, we can!

  • Where do you take couples for their photos?

Our shoot could be at the venue and its grounds or somewhere completely different – whatever you would prefer!  It all comes down to what you prefer, how much time we have and how long you are willing to be away from your guests.

  • What happens if you can’t make the wedding due to an emergency?

It would take an awful lot for me to miss your wedding, but it would be naïve of me to assume that this is impossible.  I have a network of photographers that I can contact if I absolutely can’t make your wedding, so there should always be cover if it hits the fan.

Wedding FAQs - Booking

  • When is the full balance due?

Anytime up to two weeks before the wedding day.

  • Do you have a contract?

Yes.  During our booking meeting, we’ll go through the booking form and contract together so that we’re both protected and on the same page with our expectations of each other.

  • Can I opt out of having you share my photos online and on your website?

Yes.  There is an option to do this on my booking form.

  • Do you have a second shooter?

I don’t have second shooters, but I can offer one if you would like me to, providing one is available.  This would cost an extra £250.

  • Do you provide wedding videography?

No.  While I can make videos quite well, I would not be happy providing this to paying clients.  I certainly couldn’t provide videography and photography at the same time.

  • How far do you travel?

Basically, as far as you need me to.  I charge for travel if I need to travel more than 50 miles from my home.  And if anyone ever asks me to shoot in the Hebrides, Italy or Sweden I’ll not say no!

  • Do you expect to be fed during the wedding day?

It’s always very much appreciated if the couple can include a meal for me in their plans, but I never expect it. Wedding days for me often last 10 hours, so I’ll absolutely need to eat – just ask my wife!   As long as you let me know either way in advance, I can prepare and make sure I bring food if necessary.

  • Can we do a practice shoot before the wedding day?

Yes.  As part of my wedding packages, I offer a pre-wedding couples photoshoot to get us all used to working together.  This helps me to see how you are in front of the camera, and helps you to get know me a little better, which is really important for a wedding photographer.

Wedding FAQs - About Me!

  • How did you learn photography?

I’m self-taught. I began properly taking photos in 2009, was bitten by the bug and picked up my first camera from Jessops, and I’ve never looked back. I started with theatre photography (I studied theatre), and moved on to headshots, then events, and then, in 2014, my first wedding.

  • How would you describe yourself?

I would say I’m easy-going, personable, relaxed, friendly, a good listener and absolutely hilarious. My wife would say that I’m chatty, forgetful and crack too many terrible jokes…

  • How would you describe your photography style in three words?

    Natural
    Fun
    Organic

  • What’s your favourite thing about weddings?

There’s a lot to love: the fun, the friendship, the celebration of love, but if I’m honest… When things go wrong!  No wedding runs perfectly, and those little moments of chance and chaos make the day all the more special for me.

  • What’s the most important thing about a wedding?

In my opinion – that you both stay true to yourselves on the day.  At the end of the day, it’s not about me getting spectacular photos of you, or the wedding running perfectly – it’s about your love for each other, and you having a great time!  If you take care of that, the photos will reflect this.

  • Can we meet you before the wedding day?

Yes. If it’s at all possible, I would recommend meeting before you even book with me. I’ll be one of the people spending the most time with during the wedding, so it’s really important that we get on and click with each other. The best way to do that is by meeting me, either for a cuppa over an enquiry meeting or even the booking meeting.

  • Do you have insurance?

Yes.  As well as photographic equipment insurance, I have public liability and professional indemnity insurance.

  • What equipment do you use?

For what it’s worth, I use Canon cameras, for the simple reason that a Canon was my first camera when I was starting out.  But that’s just about the least important aspect of my work – if you like the work I can do with my cameras, that’s the most important thing, right?

  • Do you have backup equipment?

Absolutely.  I have two main cameras and always bring two backups for the worst-case scenario.  I have in the past had a camera fail on me in the middle of a wedding and have had to resort to my backup, and I’m sure it’ll happen again.  I will not risk your wedding photos by not being prepared with backup equipment.  The way I see it, I can take any piece of equipment away from my kit at random and do the same job without problem, and that’s the only way to ensure you are reliable as a photographer.
